"ENGINE 844 AT THE DORA CROSSING" by James BarberSteam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific Railroad. It began as a high speed passenger train in the mid 1940s, and later pulled freight in the late 1950s. Saved from the scrap yard, it has become the Living Legend of steam engines and is now Union Pacifics ambassador of goodwill. The engine and tender weigh 454 tons, and the driving wheels are 80 in diameter. It is truly an impressive sight, whether traveling down the track, or sitting static in the railyard.
