Artist's Description

BASS REEVES STATUE by James Barber

Bass Reeves was born into slavery in 1838. He was freed during the Civil War and later became the first black U. S. marshal to serve west of the Mississippi. Reeves served under the famous Judge Isaac Parker in Fort Smith, Arkansas. During his career, he recorded over 3000 arrests for felons, and also arrested his own son for murder. This statue honoring his memory is located in downtown Fort Smith next to Judge Parker’s courthouse. The 25 foot tall statue was created by the celebrated western artist Harold Holden.
